Past Board President Brad Dean Digging the Blockhouse
The 1961-62 blockhouse dig was conducted by archaeologists and museum volunteers. Artifacts found at the site confirmed that this was indeed the fort's northwest blockhouse. Cannon balls, grapeshot and other artillery hardware were recovered from what would have been the interior basement of the blockhouse facility. Much of the material found is on display in the Fort Plain Museum's Archaeology Room.
The 1975 dig of the fort site explored only about 10% of the property currently owned by the Fort Plain Cemetery Association. Findings included barracks buildings, officers quarters, a small hexagonal blockhouse, 2 elevated bastions and earthen log walls. Many of the artifacts recovered are on display in the museum.
