Fort Ehle 1½ miles southeast of Fort Plain
(southside of the Mohawk River) This was the fortified home of William Ehle on a homelot of the Bleecker Patent, on what is now Rte 5S just south of the Fort Plain village limits. This fort was built as a neighborhood refuge and garrisoned by local militia. It was located adjacent to Ehle's Rift (as drawn by Rufus Grider on right). The fort is often confused with the Johannes Ehle house (owned by Peter Ehle at the time of the Revolution) which was located directly across the river and survived into the 20th century before its demise.
