Fort Van Alstyne
3 1/2 miles southeast of Fort Plain
(south side of Mohawk River)

Located about one mile east of present day village of Canajoharie. The fort was owned by Martin Van Alstyne who also operated a ferry at the site. It was garrisoned primarily by local militia. The building was sold to the Kane brothers after the war and became known as the "Old Roundtop Store", one of the busiest ports on the Erie Canal.

Van Alstyne Home
Another Van Alstyne home still stands on Moyer Street in Canajoharie. It was constructed by Martin J. Van Alstyne sometime prior to 1739. The house was a meeting place for the Tryon County Committee of Safety and is the place where General Herkimer received his commission as general of the Tryon County Militia. The house is often confused with Fort Van Alstyne and Fort Rensselaer (Fort Plain).
