Fort Wagner 1 1/4 miles northeast of Fort Plain
(north side of Mohawk River)
FORT WAGNER was the home of Johann Peter Wagner, a Palatine, who came to the Mohawk Valley after residing in the Hudson and Schoharie Valleys. The house was built ca. 1750 and was surrounded by a stockade with a blockhouse to the southeast of the main building. Like many Palatine homes the house consisted of only 2 large rooms with no central hallway. A spring ran through the basement as at Fort Klock affording easy and safe access to a water supply. Loopholes for defense can be found in the side walls.
Wagner's son, John Peter Wagner, II, a lieutenant colonel, fought in the Battle of Oriskany with three of his sons. The house still stands today as a private residence.
